User Guide with Question Prompts

8 Emotion Characters

8 Solution Pages

40+ Picture Scenes

1 sticker sheet

8 blank face templates

1 dry-erase Marker

How to use the flipbook:

  • Each tabbed divider shows an emotion that your child may experience. The next page shows “When I feel… I can….” The character is shown with multiple solutions or reactions to experiencing that emotion or feeling. Use these illustrations to guide children to engage in conversation about appropriate responses to a feeling or emotion that they may experience. Help your child fill in the blank for each card and come up his/her own ideas about how they would react to feeling a specific way. Guide your child to a correct and appropriate response to his or her feelings. Ex: “When I feel angry-I would punch someone.” This response would require conversation about that not being the most appropriate response and the effects that the reaction might have. Then, further guidance and conversation should direct the child to understand a more appropriate reaction.
  • Next there are various picture scenes of characters in different settings experiencing that section’s emotion. Use these picture cards to engage in conversation with your child about feelings and emotions. The pictures vary from simple to more challenging. Optional prompt sentences to describe the pictures can be offered to your child as you feel needed. For example: Frustrated-the boy is trying to tie his shoe-prompt your child to help him/her see that in the picture.
  • In addition, each emotion section includes a blank face template. Have your child use a dry erase marker and draw their illustration of how that emotion looks. Teach your child by modeling for them and explaining or showing how you would draw the emotion.
